Simple New Year’s resolutions for better ENT health in 2024

As we step into the year 2024, there’s no better time to prioritize our health, and from our perspective, specifically your ENT health. We’ve got some resolutions you can keep that will significantly contribute to the overall well-being of our ENT health.

Nurture your sinuses with moisture.

  1. Optimize indoor air humidity: Dry winter climates and heated indoor air can cause dryness and cracks in your nasal membranes. Counteract this by adding humidity to your indoor environment. Utilize a room humidifier in your bedroom from October to April, and remember to clean it often to prevent sinus problems.
  2. Stay hydrated: Adequate hydration is crucial for sinus health. Consume at least six glasses of water daily to keep your sinus mucus thin and mobile. When experiencing sinus issues, avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
  3. Nasal irrigation: Flush your nasal passages and sinuses with a saline solution to reduce the risk of sinus infections. You can choose from over-the-counter saline sprays or homemade solutions. Be sure to hold off if you have an ear infection or a nostril that’s plugged and hard to breathe through.

Prioritize your hearing.

  1. Be careful of noise levels: Loud noises can lead to hearing loss, so be mindful of the noise levels around you. When exposed to loud sounds, protect your ears by using noise-canceling headphones and earplugs. Adhere to the 60/60 rule when listening to music through headphones. Read ‘How loud is too loud‘ from our blog.
  2. Get your hearing checked. Regular tests are essential to ensuring optimal hearing health. Perhaps you or someone you love struggled to hear clearly when gathered with family over the holidays. A comprehensive hearing exam is a great way to start the year.
  3. Be consistent with hearing aids: If you already wear hearing aids, cultivate the habit of wearing your hearing aids consistently and experience improvement in your daily quality of life.

Tackle your allergies.

  1. Minimize exposure to allergens: Reduce symptoms like nasal congestion and watery eyes by minimizing your exposure to allergens. Keep your windows closed, avoid areas with high pollen levels, and utilize air purifiers and dehumidifiers in your home.
  2. Steer clear of cigarette smoke: Cigarette smoke can worsen allergies and asthma. Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke to protect your respiratory health.
  3. Consider getting tested for allergies. If your allergies are bothersome, getting tested is the best first step in developing a personalized treatment plan. Treatment may involve allergy shots, sublingual immunotherapy, or simple avoidance strategies.
