Hearing loss 101: A overview of the different types

Hearing loss is a common issue affecting 37.5 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Understanding the different types of hearing loss is the first step towards seeking appropriate treatment and improving your quality of life. At Minnesota ENT, our audiologists and doctors are committed to helping you navigate the complexities of hearing health. Here’s a breakdown of the basics.

What is hearing loss?

Hearing loss refers to the partial or complete inability to hear sounds. It can range from mild, where you struggle to hear soft sounds, to profound, where you hear very little or nothing at all. It can affect one or both ears and can develop gradually or suddenly.

The three main types of hearing loss

  1. Sensorineural hearing loss: This is the most common type and occurs due to damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve. Causes include aging, exposure to loud noise, genetic factors, certain medical conditions, and some medications. Sensorineural hearing loss is typically permanent.
  2. Conductive hearing loss: This type results from a blockage or problem in the outer or middle ear, preventing sound waves from reaching the inner ear. Common causes include earwax buildup, ear infections, fluid in the middle ear, or a perforated eardrum. Conductive hearing loss is often treatable with medication or surgery.
  3. Mixed hearing loss: As the name suggests, this is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. It means there is damage to both the inner ear and the outer or middle ear. Treatment will address both components of the hearing loss.

Indicators of hearing loss

  • Difficulty hearing conversations, especially in noisy environments
  • Needing to turn up the volume on the TV or radio
  • Asking people to repeat themselves
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Feeling like your ears are plugged or full
  • Difficulty understanding speech

What to do if you suspect hearing loss

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s essential to consult with an audiologist or ENT specialist. Early detection and intervention are crucial for managing hearing loss effectively. A hearing test can determine the type and degree of hearing loss, and our team at Minnesota ENT can recommend the best course of treatment for your specific needs.
