Hearing evaluations

To fully understand your needs and recommend the next steps, we start with a comprehensive hearing evaluation. Following a thorough history where you’ll answer a series of questions about your medical and hearing background, we perform an in-depth assessment to determine the nature and degree of your hearing loss.

When hearing loss is detected, it is categorized by which auditory system is affected:

Types of hearing losss

  • Conductive – this type of hearing loss occurs when there are deficiencies inhow sound is being conducted from the outer ear and/or middle ear. The middle ear is the mechanical part of our ear which needs to be functioning properly to transmit sound to the inner ear.
  • Sensorineural – this type of hearing loss is often due to damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or nerve pathways.
  • Mixed – hearing loss can be a result of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, with damage to both the outer or middle ear and the inner ear or auditory nerve.

Based on the results from the diagnostic testing process, we will lead a discussion of potential treatment options, encouraging you to share concerns and ask questions. We work closely with the ear, nose, and throat physicians to provide the best comprehensive care for our patients.

We may recommend a visit with one of the physicians if the hearing test results indicate a condition that needs further medical attention.
