Game-Changer: Ear Tubes in Minutes, Without Surgery

For years, ear tube placement—a common procedure for children with chronic ear infections or fluid buildup—has meant a trip to the operating room and the risks of general anesthesia. But that’s all changing, right here at Minnesota ENT.

We’re thrilled to share a huge leap forward in pediatric ear care: we’ve successfully performed our first in-office ear tube placements using the Hummingbird® Tympanostomy Tube System (TTS). This groundbreaking device means no general anesthesia needed – a game-changer for families.

This isn’t just a new technique; it’s a completely reimagined way to care for children. It’s faster, safer, and much more convenient.

What makes the Hummingbird TTS a game-changer?

Developed by Hummingbird Med Devices, a local Minnesota company near our Golden Valley clinic, the Hummingbird TTS is a single-pass device that lets us place ear tubes quickly and safely, right in our office.

Here’s why it’s revolutionizing care:

✅ No general anesthesia

The most significant advantage. Kids stay awake, avoiding all the risks and side effects of anesthesia like nausea, grogginess, and the need fasting.

✅ Office-based and parent-friendly

The entire procedure takes place in our clinic. Parents are often able to stay in the room, providing comfort and support during the process.

✅ Fast and convenient

  • Procedure time is often under 5 minutes for both ears
  • No pre-op fasting or hospital check-in
  • Kids can get back to normal activities right away – no downtime!

✅ Lower costs

By avoiding hospital and anesthesia fees, families can save up to 65%* compared to traditional surgery.

*The actual ear tube procedure is commonly covered by insurance. In instances where the Hummingbird device is not part of this coverage, some families may be required to pay the device cost. Overall total costs for ear tube placement may be less with the Hummingbird through the elimination of general anesthesia and facility fees associated with operating room(OR)-based surgical approaches. The Hummingbird may qualify for HSA or FSA account coverage.

✅ Less stress for everyone

The familiar clinic environment—and avoiding anesthesia—makes the experience far less intimidating for both children and parents.

“This is a paradigm shift in ear care,” says Joe Rohrer, MD, the Minnesota ENT otolaryngologist who performed the first procedure. “With Hummingbird TTS, we’re offering a safer, less stressful, and more affordable option that truly elevates the care we provide to our youngest patients and their families.”

A Minnesota innovation, serving Minnesota families

We’re especially proud that this advancement comes from a local company right here in our home state. Partnering with Hummingbird Med Devices reflects our commitment to innovation, excellence, and community—bringing world-class care to the families we serve every day.

What parents are asking about Hummingbird TTS

Q: Will it hurt my child?
A: We use a topical anesthetic on the eardrum to minimize discomfort. Most children tolerate the procedure very well—it’s comparable to other routine in-office pediatric treatments.

Q: How long does it take?
A: Tube placement with Hummingbird TTS takes just minutes—typically under five for both ears.

Q: What’s the recovery like?
A: That’s the best part—there’s virtually none. Your child can return to school or daycare immediately.

Q: Is my child a candidate?
A: Most children age 6 months and older who need ear tubes are eligible. Our providers will assess each child individually to ensure this is the best fit.
